~ “We are all prisoners of hope.” (Naomi Tutu) ~

I bet if you were to look at today’s newspaper, there would be at least one article about an accident, disaster, or crime. The reality is that there is tragedy around us everyday, but not everyone is aware that they can help.

I did a Google search of songs titled “Save the World”, interested to see if there was anything about how to do just that. Many artists came up, and below I have chosen my favourites. But after reading the lyrics to each one, it becomes evident that every person’s view of saving the world is different.

The song and video based on George Harrison’s lyrics is about blaming the world’s state on certain people. CLICK HERE TO SEE VIDEO. He feels keeping the millionaires employed and fighting for world domination are not the problems that need to be solved. The song by Yolanda Adams is about one type of problem in the world- hunger resulting from poverty. To her, saving the world is about starting with the children and lending a helping hand.

My view of saving other people is more along the lines as the lyrics from the song by Bon Jovi. The entire song is about love, but the beginning is very important. It is about how you don’t need a degree or high societal ranking to make a difference in the world. This relates to a problem I found in the article “The Next Generation”. This is from a magazine, and it is about the descendants of famous people coming together to change to world. They are almost creating a new United Nations among the eight of them. This is an amazing thing for the next generation of the peacekeeping idols to do, because they already have the fame. It will be easy for them to gain awareness for the causes they will be supporting and changes they will be making in the world. But it isn’t just up to the famous actors like Angelina Jolie or  powerful politicians to create change. Ordinary people like you and me can make a difference.

Even the simple fundraisers we do in school through the SRC is helping to change the world. Raising money for important causes or to support research is one way of giving back to the community and country. However, it doesn’t always have to be about money. People need to realize that volunteering their time, or even just showing they are aware of the issues, is a major contribution.

I decided to comment on your blog because at the moment you are the only one done. I agree with you that everyone helps out in there own way. I think that anything someone does to help is a good thing. Most of the people helping out are the ones that do not have the time or money anyways. But they do there part anyways. Very nice work.

Thanks, Jarrett. I know what you mean, I went through tons of blogs before I found one that was actually done!! Definitely the people who give back the most are those with time and money. But maybe this is just what shows through in the media. The well-known, powerful, rich people in the world are always in the headlines, not the ordinary people. They might both be doing the same amount of work to change the world, but it is never the “small people” that get the recognition.

I agree that people who are not rich or famous are still capable of making a change. Making a change doesn’t always recquire doing something drastic like war or hunger strikes. I really like the fact that you said being aware that an issue exist is part of making change. If we were blind to the world’s problems then nothing would ever change.
There are a lot of songs which talk about how the world needs to change and they all have different ideas. I guess changing the world is a popular topic. The songs do inspire people though. I know when I listen to song about making a difference it makes me feel like doing something good. Of course I’ve never actually done something drastic but hopefully someday I will.

I also agree that anybody, no matter who you are can make change. The people in the atricle just have a better chance because of the reputations they already have. The first part of making change is to become known, and that was no problem for them. This article is a great example of how people are capable of doing whatever they limit themselves to do.

The above comment that says “I also agree that….” is not by Nicole, i just went to her blog from mine and she forgot to logout so it says it is by her! It is really by Graeme.

Hey Nic, nice work! I see you couldn’t get your video to work…me neither!

I totally agree with you when you said that everyone has a different idea of what it means to save the world. People’s different ideas of how to make the world a better place has caused many wars and conflicts throughout history. A bit ironic hey?
I think that love is the most important thing when it comes to helping other’s as well. If people show more love towards eachother it will help out our world immensly just one person at a time. I think it’s important to show love and kindness to the people around you, because it can cause a reaction which helps many more people. The SRC is a good start. We help our community and other organizations. The school works hard to fundraise to not only benefit themselves but to benefit others.

Great Job!
Meg
